The MLBC sends thanks to Chris Bateman and the Union Democrat for getting the word out about the MLBC and our need for new members via Chris’ “Your View” piece Calling all Cyclists, This Club’s for Everyone.Union Democrat opinion piece

If you’ve come to motherlodebike.org looking for the Membership page, please also take a look at the “Our Work” section to get an idea of what your contribution can support. We need your financial support to grow, but we also need your support with advocacy by showing up to public meetings of the Tuolumne County Transportation Council, Calaveras Council of Governments, Amador County Transportation Commission, and your local City or County. Currently, the TCTC is accepting surveys for the Tuolumne County Active Transportation Plan. Please make your voice heard by providing your priority needs for bike and pedestrian improvements by completing the online questionnaire.

As we work to organize events like bike rodeos, repair days for recycling bikes, or fund raising rides, we also need volunteers. If you are unable to contribute financially, please consider using the “Contact Us” page to submit your contact information with a message explaining how you can help. When the time to stage an event comes, we need a list of potential volunteers.

Finally, see A Different Way to Bike Your Park for more on why we need effective bike advocacy in the foothills.

Promoting Bicycle Safety

The Motherlode Bicycle Coalition led their first bicycle rodeo this summer with the help of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Sonora Cyclery, and Sonora Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership. We set up a fun and educational bike safety course following the League of American Bicyclists‚ Bicycling Skills 1 2 3 Manual, gave out free helmets, provided bike maintenance, and gathered community responses for the Tuolumne County Active Transportation Plan (ATP). As a small bike advocacy organization, the involvement of the local business community and law enforcement was extremely helpful, and together we held a successful bike rodeo that we will replicate in the future.

Prior to leading the bike rodeo, UC Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) asked if we could provide a summary of the event to include on their Safety Stories page. Safety Stories is a feature where California Active Transportation Safety Information Pages (CATSIP) users can find and share snapshots of strategies, programs, and tools used by professionals, advocates and community residents to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. We were honored to make a contribution and share our experience of our summer bike rodeo. Read the full story at Safety Stories from You!

Please contact us if you would like to host a bike rodeo or bike maintenance workshop in Tuolumne or Calaveras County. We plan on leading more bike safety education rodeos and workshops for children and adults next year.

Bike Your Park Day September 28, 2019

Bike Your Park Day logoThe Adventure Cycling Association has designated September 28 as the annual Bike Your Park Day. The principle is simple: ride or bring your bike to a park and ride it! Do it for all the reasons you enjoy riding, and maybe a bunch of bikes mysteriously showing up at a park could help bring the need for better accommodations to the attention of park staff.

The foothills have a great assortment of parks available for family-friendly or more ambitious riding. Even if the other 364 days are park your bike day for you, there’s something on this list for you. Visit Adventure Cycling to register your ride and, if you register by September 22 you are entered for a chance to win a Co-Op Cycles adventure touring bike (perfect for the mountains).
