100 miles, Short and steep Hill Climbs…Paloma, Stoney Creek, Gwin and Coal Mine, Pardee, and Hogan! The route starts in Valley Springs and cyclists ride near three West Calaveras County Lakes. The hill climbs offer views of Mt. Diablo in the Bay Area. Three route options, 25, 45 and Century. The Century hill climbs are out and back so, optional! You decide!

Ride support includes road safety signage, course arrows, radio communications, safety ambulance on site at start and end location. Four Rest Stops with fresh fruit, sandwiches, snacks and water. A post ride lunch features Barrel Chicken, pasta, salad, wine and beer, and desert.

Inside Fairgrounds at Upper Stage Area

The Motherlode Bicycle Coalition and San Andreas CHP invite kids, ages 4-12 to learn how to ride a bicycle. Kids will learn basic riding skills: stop, turning, listening and watching for safe travel.

The Bike Rodeo location is inside the Fairgrounds at the upper stage area. The Fairgrounds Lawn will be available for learning how to balance and ride.Adult volunteers will assist kids with bike fit and helmet fit as well as bike handling. Bike sessions will be held at 9am-11am. No Reservation Required.

A parking fee is required to participate because the Bike Rodeo is being held during the first annual FROGTOWN BMX CLASSIC FESTIVAL. Parents, kids and families are invited to stay and watch BMX Bike Racing throughout the day!

CalBike Executive Director Dave Synder just completed the long awaited bike riding tourism report, “Promoting Safe Bicycle Travel Opportunities for Bicycle Tourism and Economic Development.” It’s a fascinating report of a study that included input from cyclists and cycling groups in Northern California.

Made possible by a Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant funded by Senate Bill 1,

this report examines safety improvements to California roads and rights-of-way. It also offers tips on how best to support bicyclists and bicycle tourism in the state, specifically in the focus areas of San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Tuolumne, Calaveras and Alpine counties.

The report identifies possible projects that encourage and support the increase of bicycling from the Central Valley to the High Sierra. The proposed projects offer a broad cross section of opportunities to encourage bicycling for residents and visitors, from new multi-mile trails linking recreational destinations, to easily-installed supportive amenities like bicycle racks, repairs stations, and wayfinding signage.

Promoting Safe Bicycle Travel

The Interregional Bike Riding Report prepared by CalBike examines bike riding tourism as an economic opportunity. The report was funded by a Caltrans Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant. Local civic leaders, business owners, tourism and economic agencies can use this report to build on current bike riding conditions. The report looks at five Showcase Bike Riding areas, four Signature Bikeway Projects, and presents an analysis of the economic benefits of encouraging bike tourism.

This report provides tools and resources to help communities, residents, businesses, and stakeholders consider an approach to economic development that is inclusive and supportive of active transportation. As one resident put it, “we have many of the pieces in place already – we just need to put them together.” It is our hope that this plan will repre- sent the first of many efforts to develop a robust, equitable, and community-supported approach to bicycle tourism.

State Parks Hike/Bike Campsite Survey and Tuolumne Volunteer Fair

California State Parks has posted a survey asking for input on Hike/Bike camping. Hike/Bike sites are lower cost shared campsites that don’t require reservations. If you tour or may someday, the availability and amenities offered in these sites may make or break your trip. Take a few minutes to explain your needs to be addressed in any changes to campgrounds or policies. Suggestions? How about Hike/Bike sites at Calaveras Big Trees, and a No Turn Away policy for bikes like in Washington State?

The MLBC is participating in the Tuolumne County Volunteer Fair. The volunteer fair is an opportunity for agencies and non-profits to meet with the public and explain their mission and their needs for volunteer help. The fair was rescheduled for the second time for August 26, 2021 only to have another Covid spike force cancellation of the in-person event. The fair was converted to a community access TV event, and the MLBC recorded a short video. The fair will be broadcast live on Access Tuolumne tomorrow, August 26, at 4pm, and is currently available to stream. Look for the MLBC at about 1:23:15 in the video. While this is a Tuolumne County event, please realize we have the same needs in Amador, Calaveras, and Mariposa Counties.
